Cavallotto

Ruby red in color, with intense garnet reflections. The nose on this San Giuseppe is intense, packed with ample aromas of dried fruit, dried flowers and more ethereal notes of tobacco and liquorice. Full-bodied and harmonious on the palate, the wine is warm, rich, and soft in the mouth, smoothing the tannin with a pleasant long finish. This wine would pair wonderfully with spicy red meat dishes as well as aged cheeses.

The 2004 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe comes across as decidedly powerful and broad-shouldered next to the Vignolo. A wall of massive tannins makes it hard to see through to the wine's potential but with air the multiple dimensions of its personality begin to open up. Dark fruit, tar, mint, pine and a host of other spiced, balsamic aromas and flavors make an appearance on the large-scaled, dramatic finish. The 2004 San Giuseppe is an utterly mind-blowing, dramatic Barolo from Cavallotto. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034.

Wine Spectator

This bears the textbook flavor profile of tar and roses, backed by some gripping tannins. A big wine, powerful and intense, this grabs your attention with its long aftertaste of tobacco, spice and mineral. It still has some way to go before the tannins soften. Here's a vineyard-designate Barolo Riserva with pristine aromas of cherry, wild berry, smoke, tar, licorice and leather. The streamlined mouthfeel is polished yet firm, and the wine offers a long fade of cherry and spice flavors.
